I'm not normally one to jump on any bandwagons but some are too exciting to let simply pass by. A lot has been made recently of Birmingham potentially prising Channel 4 away from London and whereas I cannot explain the subtle nuances of this, I can say confidently that C4 would be in safe hands!
When I was a teenager, I dreamed of working in the 'Media'. I even went on to study it at University and apart from a few fleeting moments (working on such legendary television as 'Housecall' & 'Ten Years Younger') my dreams slowly fizzled out. I always put this down to two things, not living in London and the old adage "It's not what you know, it's Who you know'. This was of course rubbish and it purely boiled down to a lack of motivation and effort on my behalf!
However, some 10+ years later and Birmingham is positively brimming with opportunity. You can't walk the streets of the city without stumbling over another uber-cool design agency, website company, media firm or start-up. Photographers queue politely to take shots of the Bullring. Every coffee bar has more MacBooks than Macachino's. The city is electric with change and suddenly the grey concrete jungle feels like it's the beating heart of something special.
So what does this mean for C4? It means it's safe to try something a little different. There is talent pouring out onto the streets and the infrastructure and money are following. Multinational banks have made their home here. Buildings are being thrown up left, right and center like monoliths to investment in the city! Even Stephen Speilberg holidays here (or something, I wasn't paying attention). In a few years, you'll be able to get a train back to London in less time than it used to take getting to the toilets in Snobs (That's a Birmingham thing C4, you would have loved it!).
Whether we actually manage to break London's icy grip on C4 or not, one thing is for sure, my teenage Brum-bashing self would be amazed at how far the city has come. My 'middle aged' self can't quite believe that I have the fortune that all the good stuff has basically landed on my doorstep! Even though I might not be at the cutting edge of cool, the people in Birmingham that are would be able to take Channel 4 to amazing new places and provide a safe future for a great British institution. We've got you Channel 4, we're ready for you.
